@Jon Christianson, It is the socially constructed gender-specific vulnerability of women and men that leads to the relatively higher female disaster mortality rates compared to those of men.3#lossanddamage
In the current state of understanding, unfortunately, gender-oriented views and compassionate approaches seems largely overlooked. The SBI Work Programme must pay immediate attention to fill in the gap in understanding.#lossanddamage
@alitauqeersheik #lossanddamage v. delinked from SDGs/MDGs. Some scared that tackling climate issues in post-MDGs will be too political.
To what extent are insurance schemes for #lossanddamage reaching women? I am wondering if there could be a similar effort to microfinance, where women have been targeted...
@gender issue: new paper on gender and #lossanddamage to be released by Loss and Damage in Vulnerable Countries Initiative in the next days

@SDG/MDG: interesting topic, agree with Tom that #lossanddamage and #climatechange needs to be handled with care, but needs further thoughts
@Megan @Koko Correct me if I'm wrong, but my feeling is that we don't have enough evidence of how insurance/micro-insurance really plays out in terms of whole community impacts - what about the way that insurance payouts alter local markets and make things unaffordable for some?
@saleemzeal R&D should be key component of climate finance - we need to experiment to know what works best, but I worry that contributor countries are too risk averse given pressure from domestic politics.
Some of our AlertNet Climate freelancers have done interesting reporting on microcredit. We were fascinated in one area to see that the ability to take out insurance gave insured people the right to borrow against it - and they did, so the money was gone before it was paid out. Lots of complications!
@meera, this is a deep rooted problem with no simple solution. We should try and push for mechanisms directed towards carrying out assessments of gender-differentiated vulnerability.#loss&damage
CDM never meant to address +
CDM never meant to address #lossanddamage. Helped many developing countries to learn about mitigation action, but has flaws and insufficient
@Koko @MeeraGhani - I guess the interest from reinsurers means there must be money to be made. Given the projected massive scale of #lossanddamage, how does that work? Could there be a kind of insurance that would not be available unless a certified level of disaster risk reduction work had already been undertaken? Or maybe I don't understand the insurance market well enough!
@CDM: two different debates: problems of CDM and #lossanddamage from CC impacts. have not seen "large-scale" livelihood loss from CDM, you?
