Tan: Clearly the fossil fuel subsidies also end up driving fossil fuel infrastructure.....
Carlo: So communication about this is really key to persuading people to go along with it, or that's it's necessary and useful....
Stella: While the experts have known about them for ages, I think many people are only now getting to understand just how heavily the world subsidises fossil fuels.....
Tan: How about directing a decent share of the money spent on subsidies into dramatically improving public transport and cutting the cost of that?
Tan: Maybe investment in electric vehicles?
Carlo and Shelagh: What do you think is the best use of money saved by cutting fossil fuel subsidies in most places, in order to earn the greatest public support for the change?
Shelagh: It is really interesting how money going to renewables is seen as government unfairly subsidising them, while money going to fossil fuels, as part of the norm, is not seen in the same way
@Shelagh - good point on business. Will we see a growing war of words between fossil fuel biz and renewable biz (though some big companies do both)?
